Sangeet Fashion began in 2008 on the third floor of 48A Park Street, Kolkata, with one idea: kurta sets that boutiques could put in their windows and women would actually wear, not just photograph. Eighteen years later the address is the same and so is the idea.

Every piece starts at the cutting table with Sanjeet Madnani, who draws the silhouettes and decides the fabric, and Geetu Madnani, who styles the sets and talks to the customers who walk in. Between them they have dressed boutique clients from Kolkata to Jaipur to Bangalore, and that conversation — what fits, what survives a Puja evening, what reads under fairy lights — is where each season's designs come from.

How a Sangeet set is made

Cut in-house. Fabric is sourced, checked and cut at the atelier. We work mostly in Chanderi, cotton-silk, organza and raw silk because they take embroidery well and breathe in Kolkata weather.

Embroidered by hand. The cut panels go to karigars we have worked with for over a decade — zardozi and aari on the adda frame, chikankari, mirror work, sequin and thread work — each craft with its own specialists. A yoke can take a full day of one person's work.

Finished and checked. Panels come back, are stitched, lined where they need to be, pressed and checked by hand before they go on the rail. That is why we make dozens of a design, not thousands, and why a set often says "small batch" on the site.

What we believe

• Hand embroidery should be visible: run your thumb over it, turn it inside out.
• A set should work for a whole day, not one photograph.
• Sizes S to XL should fit real bodies; our size guide is measured on our own samples.
• The price should reflect the hours in it — no more, no less.
